GHMC Polling ongoing peaceful in Hyderabad
Polling is underway in Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation elections today. Till 12 noon, about 10 per cent polling was recorded for the 150-division GHMC. Amidst tight COVID precautions and security arrangements, polling has been peaceful so far. There were some incidents of arguments and scuffles reported at a few divisions between the cadres of different political parties but police dispersed them to ensure smooth polling.
Over 74 lakh electors are eligible to elect 150 corporators out of which at least 50 per cent are women. The polling will continue till 6PM today evening. Despite carrying an intense voter awareness campaign, the elector turn out at the polling stations is discouraging for the candidates and also for those who value larger and wide participation of this important democratic activity. Comparatively, the polling is better in Medchal Malkajgiri, Rangareddy and Sangareddy districts than in Hyderabad. Hyderabad has 84 divisions where as these three districts have 66 out of 150 divisions.
Printing mistakes on the ballot paper reported at one division for which the State Election Commission is likely to announce the repolling. As part of COVID precautions, all electors are coming to the polling stations, wearing face masks. Special provisions have been made to utilise postal ballots for elders above 80 years of age and those who are COVID 19 positive. The polling is expected to gain a little momentum post midday.
Total of 9101 polling stations have been setup across 4 districts, Hyderabad, Ranga Reddy, Medchal Malkajgiri and Sangareddy. Videography or live webcasting from about half of the polling stations is going on to ensure constant vigil.
It may be recalled that the ruling TRS is contesting from all 150 divisions while BJP is in the fray in 149. Congress is contesting polls in 146 divisions while TDP is in fray in 106, MIM in 51 and Left parties in 29 divisions. There are 76 candidates from registered parties and 415 independents too in the fray.
