UP Farmers interest to cultivate chemical free ‘Chandaui Kala Chawal’ with cooparation of APEDA

Gradually increasing cultivation area

Chandauli, Uttar Pradesh is popularly known as the Bowl of Rice “Dhaan Ka Katora of Uttar Pradesh“for non basmati rice because of fertile lands of the Gangetic Plain.

In June 2018, chemical free black rice was cultivated for the first time in Chandauli by 30 farmers in 10 hectares of land producing 300 quintals of the product. More number of farmers were then educated with the process of cultivating ‘Chandauli kala chawal’ without the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. In the year 2019-20, 400 farmers cultivated it in 250 hectares of land producing 8000 quintals of chemical free kala chawal.

Research has shown that Kala Chawal has higher protein, iron, fiber, and anti-oxidant, contents in comparison with other varieties of rice. It tastes good and others several health benefits too.

Considering the potential of Black Rice, APEDA organized a Virtual Buyer Seller Meet of Farmers, FPOs, and Rice Exporters on 9th December 2020. VBSM provided the platform to the farmers, FPOs and rice exporters to interact with each other. Rice exporters have shown their interest for procurement of rice from the region. This BSM was organized under the chairmanship of Dr. M Angamuthu, Chairman APEDA, along with Shri Deepak Agrawal, Divisional Commissioner Varanasi, Shri Navneet Singh Chahal, DM Chandauli, Officers from APEDA and State Agri Department. Around 15 FPO/Farmers Committee of Chandauli district cultivating Black rice along with few leading Indian Rice Exporters participated in V-BSM.

It has been decided during the VBSM for preparation of an holistic plan for implementation and organizing a Black Rice Chef Conference where the leading Chefs will be invited for preparation of cuisines of Black Rice and live preparations will be demonstrated. Journalists will be invited to write about black rice of Chandauli Region for promoting Black Rice of Chandauli Region. Further, focus would also be given for cultivation of Organic Black Rice and efforts to be made for running a campaign for publicizing the product . It was also decided to encourage the exporters for value addition and product diversification.

Considering the potential of increasing exports of Black, APEDA is preparing a perspective Action Plan for increasing export of Black Rice from Chandauli Region for a period five years i.e. 2021-2026 to enable all concerned stakeholders for taking necessary action in a time bound manner for achieving the target.

Further, efforts would be made in association with State Government on identification of production area, creation of platform to consolidate farmers, FPOs, Exporters, Associations and other stakeholders for identification of new Potential International Markets for promotion of Black Rice.
