Centre to conducts ‘CAT’ for admission into All Central Universities from 2021

The central government might implement the conduction of the Common Aptitude Test (CAT) for seeking admissions into central universities such as DU, BHU, and JNU from 2021.

The Common Aptitude Test will be conducted for admissions into all central university. It will most likely be implemented from academic session 2021-22. The Common Aptitude Test will most likely be conducted twice a year.

The central government is planning to implement a single entrance test by the name of Common Aptitude Test for admissions into Delhi University, Jawaharlal Nehru University, Banaras Hindi University, and other central universities from the academic session 2021-22.

The government has planned to take the step to implement the conduction of the Common Aptitude Test in accordance with the proposals put forward by the National Education Policy, which was recently approved by the Union Cabinet.

According to several media reports, a seven-member committee has been set up to recommend the modalities and implementation of the Common Aptitude Test which will grant admissions into central universities from the next academic session.

The high aptitude entrance test will most likely come into effect in time for the admissions for the undergraduate programmes in all central universities across the country for the academic session 2021-22.

Specifics of Common Aptitude Test

As per several media reports, the entrance test will be conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) and will be mandatory for all the candidates seeking admissions in undergraduate courses in central universities.

It would be a computer-based test with a general assessment component and a subject-specific component. The language, logical reasoning, and quantitative aptitude of the student will be tested, along with the subject-specific assessment.

This examination will eliminate the need for applying and travelling for different entrances each year. The idea behind the Common Aptitude test has been evolved from the proposal of the NEP 2020 which was submitted in July this year.

Among the initial recommendations are proposals for conducting the examination twice a year. For the 2021-22 sessions, however, the examination is proposed to be conducted once. The students will have an option of appearing for the exams more than once.

The exam is also set to reduce the dependency of students on Class 12 board exam marks and reduce the academic pressure of the students by bringing a uniform platform for admissions into central universities across the country.

The seven-member committee will soon put forward their recommendations about the implementation and conduction of the Common Aptitude Test from the next academic year.
