EFLU organises webinars on Language and Training Develop
Hyderabad: The English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad, organized two webinars recently—one by the Department of Materials Development, Testing and Evaluation, on “Literature for Language Development” and the other on “Situating ELT in Indian Multilingualism: MT as a Royal Road to ELT” by the Department of Training and Development.
Elaborating on how literary texts can be used to teach language, Prof. B. N. Patnaik, former Professor of English, IIT Kanpur, shared his experience of having used literary texts of R. K. Narayan, Chinua Achebe, and Manoj Das for developing linguistic abilities. He stressed that such texts are not only motivating, enduring, but also generate a lot of ideas and have scope for language use.
Former Professor of Jawaharlal Nehru University, and ICSSR National Fellow, Prof. Ajit Mohanty delivered a talk on Situating ELT in Indian Multilingualism: MT as a Royal Road to ELT. The webinar focused on the hierarchical nature of Indian multilingualism characterized by a Double Divide and the place of English in India.
Prof. Mohanti shared with the audience that research on classroom practices in teaching of English in India shows that the complex challenges of negotiating the Double Divide led to divergent pedagogic practices and compromises in the standard of English.
Both the Departments expressed their gratitude to the Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, The English and Foreign Languages University, Hyderabad, and Member UGC, Prof. E. Suresh Kumar, for constantly promoting and supporting such academic activities in the University even during the pandemic.
Faculty members of EFLU, research scholars from EFLU Hyderabad, Regional Campuses at Shillong and Lucknow and other ELT professionals from across the country attended the webinar. Both the events were well received and generated a lot of discussion.
