INCOIS will celebrates 23rd Foundation day on Feb 3rd, 2021

Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), Ministry of Earth Sciences, and Government of India will be commemorating its 23rd Foundation Day on February 03, 2021. Since its establishment on 3rd February 1999, this vibrant organization has grown as one of the leading institute’s world-over in the field of Operational Oceanography, and is pursuing a focussed mandate on Ocean Observations, Modelling, Information and Advisory Services.

The services provided by INCOIS, such as the Tsunami and Storm Surge Early Warnings, Ocean State Forecasts, Potential Fishing Zone advisories and Ocean Data Services are proved to have immense socio-economic benefits for a wide range of stakeholders, and enhance the lives and livelihoods of coastal communities.

The Tsunami early warning centre of INCOIS is identified as a Tsunami Service Provider (TSP) for the Indian Ocean region, and it’s International Training Centre for Operational Oceanography (ITCO ocean) is recognized as a Category-2 Centre (C2C) of UNESCO for training young researchers and professionals from all over the world in different branches of Oceanography.

The Foundation day celebrations of INCOIS will comprise the prestigious ‘INCOIS Foundation Day Lecture’ by Dr. Vladimir Ryabinin, Executive Secretary, Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) of UNESCO and Assistant Director-General of UNESCO on “United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (Ocean Decade)”.

The lecture will be immediately followed by a kick-off meeting of the “National Decade Coordination Committee (NDCC)” that has been recently constituted by the Ministry of Earth Sciences (MoES) to facilitate national contributions to the Ocean Decade, engage national stakeholders and enhance their access to Decade benefits. Dr. M. Rajeevan, Secretary, MoES and Chairman, INCOIS Governing Council will preside over the events.

It may be recalled that the Ocean Decade 2021 – 2030, being coordinated by the IOC of UNESCO, is a unique opportunity to engage the ocean science community in achieving the Sustainable Development Goals – globally, regionally and locally. It will provide a ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity to create a new foundation, across the science-policy interface, to strengthen the management of our oceans and coasts for the benefit of humanity.

The Ocean Decade will strengthen the international cooperation needed to develop the scientific research and innovative technologies that can connect ocean science with the needs of society. The activities of INCOIS can contribute immensely and also benefit from the Ocean Decade framework.

The Foundation day celebrations will be preceded by ‘Early Career Researchers’ Symposium on February 02, 2021. Prof. Raghu Murtugudde (University of Maryland, USA) and Dr. Shubha Sathyendranath (Plymouth Marine Laboratory, UK) will deliver the plenary talks.
