Motera stadium named after PM Modi: It’s insult to Sardar Patel:Congress

Centre on Wednesday renamed the world’s largest cricket stadium after PM Narendra Modi. The move led to backlash from Opposition parties who termed the move as an insult to Sardar Patel.

The renaming of Sardar Patel Cricket Stadium to Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad’s Motera has triggered a political tug of war between BJP and the Congress. President Ram Nath Kovind inaugurated the newly revamped Motera Stadium on Wednesday.

The stadium, which will now be known as Narendra Modi Stadium, will be located in the larger Sardar Patel Sports Enclave. The enclave will come up around the Narendra Modi Stadium and will have facilities for several sports.

Hailed as the world’s largest cricket venue, the Sardar Patel Stadium at Motera near Ahmedabad in Gujarat was renamed the Narendra Modi Stadium. The announcement, which took may by surprise, was made minutes before the refurbished cricket stadium was due to host its first international match, between India and England.

While the Congress accused the BJP of insulting the legacy of Sardar Vallabbhai Patel by renaming the stadium, the BJP countered with a clarification that only the cricket stadium had been renamed and hailed PM Modi’s contribution to the nation.

The Congress responded to the renaming by criticising the BJP. Taking a swipe at the BJP, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi said in a tweet, “Beautiful how the truth reveals itself.”

“It is BJP’s tradition. When Atal Ji was alive, Atal Chowk was named after him. He was no more the PM but Atal Chowk was named after him in Chhattisgarh. It is a sign that Modi ji will soon be a former [Prime Minister] like him,” Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel said in a press conference on Wednesday.

In a veiled reference to the RSS, Congress MP Shashi Tharoor said in a tweet, “Maybe they just realised the stadium was named for a Home Minister who had banned their parent organisation!”

“Or maybe this is advance booking to ensure the next visiting Head of State is hosted here, like Trump? Or is this the beginning of a legacy-creation-thru-labelling spree?” Shashi Tharoor went on to say.

Addressing a press conference on Wednesday, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera trained attacked the government by saying they do not believe that subsequent governments will name anything after them.

“First Modi Ji came to remove Gandhi Ji from the Khadi calendar. Today, the name of Sardar Patel was removed and the name of stadium was changed from his name,” Pawan Khera said.

Hardik Patel, president of the Gujarat Pradesh Congress Committee (GPCC) attacked the government over its decision to rename the stadium.

“Is renaming the complex to Narendra Modi stadium not an insult to Sardar Patel?” Hardik Patel asked. He went even further to say that the BJP, which seeks votes in the name of Sardar Patel is now insulting India’s first Union Home Minister.

Wading into the controversy, former Madhya Pradesh chief minister Kamal Nath said renaming the complex to Narendra Modi stadium is “an insult to the Iron Man.”

“Those who achieve big things, the world remembers them by naming heritage sites after them. Those who bounce ‘jumlas’, how do they name structures after themselves even when they are alive?” Congress leader Kamal Nath said in a tweet.

“When Modi Ji became the Chief Minister of Gujarat, he said that Gujaratis should also get recruited in the army and advance in sports. Today, Gujarat has moved ahead in both recruitment and sports in the army. It was Modi’s visionary approach that cricket money should be spent in the development of all sports, not just cricket,” Union Home Minister Amit Shah said.

Union Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad responded to criticism of the government over the renaming of the cricket stadium in Ahmedabad.

“I want to ask Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi that while they have objection over renaming of Motera Stadium to Narendra Modi Stadium, Have they ever praised world’s tallest statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel in Kevadia? Have they even visited it?” Ravi Shankar Prasad said during a press conference.

“It is a matter of joy that the world’s largest cricket stadium, Motera Stadium, will now be known as Narendra Modi Stadium. Modi ji had dreamed this as Gujarat CM, which was completed today,” Union Health Minister Harsh Vardhan said in a tweet.

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan, on the other hand, thanked the Centre and Prime Minister Narendra Modi “for his vision to dedicate the world’s largest stadium to a country where cricket is not just a sport, but a religion”.

Defending the government’s move, Union Minister Prakash Javedkar issued a clarification saying, “Only the name of the stadium has been changed but the entire complex will still be known as Sardar Patel Cricket Stadium.”

“In 2007, Smt Sonia Gandhi came to Arunachal Pradesh and changed beautiful Arunachal University as Rajiv Gandhi University, laid foundation for Rajiv Gandhi Polytechnic, after having Indira Gandhi Park, Rajiv Gandhi Stadium, Nehru Museum, Jawahar Nehru College, list is endless,” Kiren Rijiju, Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Youth Affairs and Sports said in a tweet.

“A fine gift to a legend – moment of great joy as world’s biggest cricket stadium gets named after Hon PM Sri @narendramodi. The iconic Sardar Patel Sports Enclave at Ahmedabad is a symbol of India’s pride,” Assam Finance Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

“Stands are allocated through an open auction and RaGa and his family are welcome to bid for it But this constant targeting of job creators is a problem!” BJP’s IT cell chief Amit Malviya remarked.

Union Education Minister Ramesh Pokhriyal added, “The party that is invoking Patel’s name today should also note that the world’s largest statue of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was also made under the leadership of Narendra Modi Ji.”
