AMD celebrated Dr. G.R.Udas Birth Centenary
The birth centenary of Dr. Gajanan Rajaram Udas, Former Director, Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMD) was celebrated on 28th March, 2021 at Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune through a virtual meeting. The virtual function was planned and arranged by his student Dr. P. Krishnamurthy, in association with the Department of Geology, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune.
Dr. D.K. Sinha, Director, AMD speaking on the occasion paid rich tributes to Dr. G.R. Udas. He said that Dr Udas was a born leader and a great visionary. As Director, AMD (1974-1981), Dr. Udas was instrumental in shifting the Headquarters of AMD from New Delhi to Hyderabad during 1974 and establishing the North Eastern Region of AMD in Shillong, Meghalaya in 1976.
Dr. Sinha praised the efforts of Dr. Udas in initiating the development of Bodal and Jajawal uranium exploratory mines in Chhattisgarh and commencing exploration in Ambadongar, Gujarat. Ambadongar was his research area, where AMD has established a large REE resource. Dr. Udas also provided the necessary impetus for initiating high-sensitivity airborne spectrometric and magnetic surveys in AMD during 1978.
Recognising the immense contributions of Dr. G.R. Udas to AMD, Dr. R. Chidambaram the then Chairman, Atomic Energy Commission dedicated the AMD Complex, Hyderabad to Dr. G.R. Udas, on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee Celebrations of AMD on 29th July, 1999.
