Uttarakhand Forest Fire: 4 persons, 7 animals dead; CM Tirath Singh Rawat calls emergency meeting

Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to the chief minister to take stock of the situation and said that the central government has given orders to deploy NDRF teams and provide helicopters to the Uttarakhand government.

Uttarakhand Fire: At least four persons and 7 animals have died in a fire that broke out in 62 hectares of forest area in the last 24 hours. The Principal Chief Conservator has informed that 12,000 guards and fire watchers of the state forest department have been deployed to douse the fire. So far, the fire has destroyed property worth Rs 37 lakhs.

Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat today held an emergency meeting over fire incidents via video conferencing. “We asked the Centre to give us two choppers to take control of fire situation. We have been given the same. We are hoping to douse fire using choppers today,” the chief minister said.

The chief minister further said that currently, there were 40 incidents of forest fire in the state including Nainital, Almora, Tehri Garhwal and Pauri Garhwal. “Around 12,000 forest workers have been deployed and 1,300 fire crew stations have been set up,” Rawat said.

Union Home Minister Amit Shah has assured all possible assistance to Uttarakhand government to control forest fire. Chief Minister Teerath Singh Rawat said that he talked to the Union Minister on phone about the increasing incident of forest fire in the state. He said that the Centre will also send an NDRF team if required.
