Delhi Capitals showcased their batting might on Sunday as they beat Punjab Kings in Match 11 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 in Mumbai to grab the third spot on the table.
Chasing 196 for victory, Delhi rode on a whirlwind 92 off 49 balls from Shikhar Dhawan to register the 2nd highest successful run chase in the IPL at the Wankhede Stadium.
Dhawan started attacking the Punjab bowlers from the word go in their pursuit of 196 at the Wankhede Stadium, hitting a four to get off the mark against Arshdeep Singh. He hit 13 fours and couple of towering sixes but missed out on his 3rd IPL hundred by just 8 runs.
Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw’s opening partnership laid the foundation for the chase as they added 59 for the first wicket in just 5.3 overs. Shaw fell for 32 off 17 balls but Dhawan carried on to anchor the chase but sadly, couldn’t stay till the end.
Delhi actually didn’t miss Dhawan in the end as Marcus Stoinis added the finishing touches with an unbeaten cameo of 27 off 13 balls with 3 fours and a six. He was well supported by Lalit Yadav at the other end, he remained not out on 12.
DC vs PBKS IPL 2021: Highlights
During his knock the 35-year-old also overtook Warner and Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma on the overall list of batsmen with most runs in the IPL.
Orange Cap for Gabbar
Dhawan now occupies the third spot on the list ahead of Warner (5347 runs) and Rohit (5324). Dhawan was also presented with the Orange Cap after the game match as he went past Glenn Maxwell to grab the top spot on the list of batsmen with the most runs in IPL 2021.
Dhawan holds the top position with 186 runs and counting. He is averaging over 62 this season with 2 half-centuries and also batting a strike rate of over 163.
Earlier in the evening, Delhi Capitals captain Rishabh Pant won the toss and decided to put Punjab Kings in to bat first. Mayank Agarwal and KL Rahul gleefully accepted the invitation and the pair added 122 for the first wicket on a great batting pitch.
Rahul, Mayank Fire at the top
Mayank Agarwal was the more aggressive of the two and finished with 69 off 36 balls – his knock was studded with 7 fours and two sixes. PBKS skipper KL Rahul, who had hit a strokeful 91 in the team’s first match of the IPL 2021, was slower to get off the blocks but made 61 off 51 balls. He was finally dismissed by Kagiso Rabada, caught by Marcus Stoinis in the deep.
Chris Gayle and Nicholas Pooran managed only 11 and 9 respectively but two uncapped India players, Deepak Hooda and Shahrukh Khan, once again stood up for the team and hit some lusty blows to take Punjab Kings to a massive 195 for 4 off their 20 overs.
This match was played on a different pitch but the batting performance from Punjab Kings would have made coach Anil Kumble happy especially after a shocking game against Chennai Super Kings. Nothing seemed to go right for Punjab against the Super Kings but they were in a much better space against DC on Sunday.
In the first match of the day, Royal Challengers Bangalore had defeated Kolkata Knight Riders by 38 runs after Glenn Maxwell (78) and AB de Villiers (76 not out) hit aggressive half-centuries. de Villiers was named man-of-the-match as RCB reclaimed the top position in the points table.
