RCB vs PBKS: Left-arm spinner Harpeet Brar and captain KL Rahul came up with electric performances as Punjab Kings (PBKS) defeated Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) by 34 runs in Ahmedabad on Friday.
The match witnessed Monga-born Brar take the wickets of Virat Kohli (35), Glenn Maxwell (0) and AB de Villiers (3) and KL Rahul smash 91 not out off 57. Brar (25* off 17) and Rahul also partnered for 61 unbeaten runs off 32 balls to help their team post a competitive 180-run target against a formidable Bangalore batting line-up.
After PBKS posted 179 for the loss of 5 wickets, RCB innings started with an exciting over from pacer Riley Meredith. He managed to beat Devdutt Padikkal and then Virat Kohli. The next over saw an intense battle between two Indian superstars — Virat Kohli and Mohammed Shami. After being hit for an aggressive boundary on the first ball, Mohammed Shami came back strongly with a short ball which hit Kohli on his elbow. With quite a few actions in the first 2 overs, something was bound to happen in the third.
In fact a lot happened. Meredith got hit for a six by Padikkal on the first delivery but replied in style by uprooting his off-stump.
Rajat Paitdar walked in at three as Shami, Merdith, Ravi Bishnoi and Harpeet Brar contiued to keep things tight for RCB. Apart from the occasional boundaries from Kohli, runs also dried up. At the end of 10 overs Bangalore were 62/1.
Brilliant 11th over from Harpreet Brar
After a good outing with the bat, a confident Brar came up with a glorious 11th over for his team. The left-arm spinner castled Kohli on the first ball and inflicted further damage by knocking off Glenn Maxwell’s off-stump on the very next delivery.
Brar dismisses AB de Villiers to complete a treble in the match
The 25-year-old in his next over got the golden wicket of AB de Villiers. In-from de Villiers chipped one into the hands of KL Rahul at extra cover as Brar’s eyes opened wide in shock. The Moga-born’s first three wickets in IPL in his 4-match IPL career — Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers!! He ended the match there and then itself.
Later, Patidar, in his quest to revive RCB’s damaged hopes, hit a boundary and six of Deepak Hood in the 14th over but was outdone by Chris Jordan in the next over. His struggling knock ended at 30-ball 31.
Ravi Bishnoi also joined the party and got Shahbaz Ahmed and Daniel Sams in the 16th over.
Harshal Patel (31 off 13) fired towards the end of the tunnel for RCB but that did not bother PBKS much as they registered their third win of the season.
Punjab Kings innings
After being asked to bat first KL Rahul’s new opening partner for the match Prabhsimran Singh got out in the 4th over. Kyle Jamieson made the full use of his height and extracted extra bounce as an off-guard youngster gave a simple catch to Virat Kohli at extra cover.
Chris Gayle walked in next and he had to play a major role in the absence of injured Mayank Agarwal and presence of out-of-form Nicholas Pooran. Gayle did not disappoint and came all guns blazing against his former team to fire Punjab to 49/1 in Powerplay. He smashed 5 fours in the last over of Powerplay from Jamieson, the first four one after the other and then one on the last ball.
The T20 superstar, later went on to torment Yuzvendra Chahal as well but fell on a Daniel Sams delivery in the 11th over. He departed for 24-ball 46, falling short of his 32nd IPL fifty by 4 runs.
Gayle’s departure dried up runs for Punjab Kings and a floodgate of sorts opened. Nicholas Pooran and Shahrukh Khan departed for a duck. Pooran fell to another short delivery from Jamieson, while Shahrukh was outfoxed by a googly from Chahal. All-rounder Shahbaz Nadeem also joined the party and hunted Deepak Hooda in between the two wickets.
Harpreet Brar’s cameo and KL Rahul’s firework in the last 3 overs
Harpreet Brar broke the deadlock and hit a boundary for Punjab after a gap of six overs. He smashed a four and a six on the 2nd and 3rd ball of the 18th over from Purple Cap holder Harshal Patel. Rahul also managed to get a four in the same over.
7-run 19th over from Mohammed Siraj
Mohammed Siraj bowled a brilliant penultimate over, giving away just 7 runs. The boundary in the over, came on the last ball after a thick edge from Rahul went flying over short third man.
22-run 20th over from Harshal Patel
Kl Rahul, batting on 76 at the start of the over, hit a four before pumping a six and hitting another four to race to 91 off 57. He was reluctant to give strike to his batting partner on the final delivery but Harpreet ended his good cameo with a six over square leg boundary. Harshal Patel went wicketless after spending 53 runs as Punjab managed 179/5 in 20 overs.
