Shikhar Dhawan’s 69 not helped DC chase 167 in just 17.4 overs: Mayank Agarwal hit 99 not out on captaincy debut for Punjab Kings: Delhi Capitals are on top of the points table with 6 wins in 8 matches
PBKS vs DC: Delhi Capitals inched closer to a spot in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 as they rode on a masterful 69 not out from Shikhar Dhawan to beat Punjab Kings by 7 wickets in Match 29 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. With 6 wins from 8 matches, Delhi are the first team to go past the 10-point mark in IPL 2021.
Delhi Capitals returned to the top of the IPL 2021 points table, leapfrogging Chennai Super Kings who suffered a 4-wicket loss to Mumbai Indians in Delhi on Saturday.
Shikhar Dhawan led a perfectly paced chase with different players playing different roles as Delhi Capitals gunned down the 167-run target in just 17.4 overs, once again boosting their Net Run Rate. Dhawan regained the Orange Cap, taking his tally in the season to 379 runs in 8 matches.
IPL 2021, PBKS vs DC: Highlights
Mayank Agarwal’s valiant 99 not out on debut as IPL captain went in vain as Punjab Kings’ total of 166 for 6 was not enough in Ahmedabad where dew set in to make things a little difficult for the defending team. Mayank was leading Punjab in the absence of KL Rahul who was hospitalised earlier in the day after having been diagnosed with acute appendicitis.
Shikhar Dhawan and Prithvi Shaw came up with yet another bulldozing opening partnership, giving Delhi Capitals the early momentum in their chase. Shaw hit 39 from just 22 balls while Dhawan fired as well as the duo added 63 runs in just 36 balls.
Harpreet Brar, who made headlines with wickets of Virat Kohli, Glenn Maxwell and AB de Villiers the other night in Ahmedabad, broke the opening stand with another beauty of a delivery to castle Shaw but Dhawan and Steve Smith kept the scoreboard moving in the middle-overs despite not taking too many risks.
Smith fell in the 13th over but Delhi Capitals were well-placed at 111 for 2 in just 13 overs. Rishabh Pant (11-ball 14) and Shimron Hetmyer (4-ball 16) made sure the table-toppers completed the formality in quick time.
While Mohammed Shami and Riley Meredith were on the expensive side, Mayank Agarwal might have missed a trick by not giving Brar another over. The left-arm spinner had conceded just 19 runs in 3 overs and picked up a wicket.
Mayank Agarwal’s valiant 99 in vain
However, there was nothing wrong with Mayank Agarwal’s valiant knock. In his first match as captain in the IPL, Mayank took on the responsibility well to hit 99 not out in just 58 balls. However, he found very little support from the rest of the batters.
Prabhsimran Singh fell for 12 and Chris Gayle was castled by Kagiso Rabada after the West Indies star got a start. Dawid Malan, who made his IPL debut, replacing Nicholas Pooran, struggled to get going before being castled by Axar Patel.
Mayank did the bulk of the scoring in the end overs to lift Punjab to a par score but it wasn’t enough for the side who are now at the 7th spot with 3 wins in 8 matches.
