Himanta Biswa Sarma to be new Chief Minister of Assam
Senior BJP leader Himanta Biswa Sarma will be the next Chief Minister of Assam. He was elected as the leader of the legislative party today. The legislative party meeting was held in Guwahati today in the presence of central observers Narendra Singh Tomar and Arun Singh.
Senior leaders B L Santosh and Vijayanta Jay Panda were also present in the meeting. Prior to that incumbent Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal submitted his resignation letter to Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi at Raj Bhawan.
Mr Sarma, who represents Jalukbari assembly constituency, joined BJP in 2015. Prior to that, he held several important portfolios in the Tarun Gogoi led Congress government.
A writer and sports administrator, Mr Sarma is also holding the post of Convenor of the North East Democratic Alliance, NEDA. As NEDA Convenor he was instrumental in forming BJP led governments in several North Eastern states.
