Mumbai: Cyclone Tauktae uproots about 892 trees
Maharashtra, about 892 trees were uprooted as cyclone Tauktae passed through Mumbai’s shores leading to heavy rains and winds gusting to 114 kmph.
Although 504 of these trees were located in private premises, the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai worked on war footing to remove them to ensure roads were cleared at the earliest.
Noting that about seventy per cent of the trees that were uprooted were foreign species like royal palm, gulmohar, sonmohar, and peltophorum, the civic body has urged citizens to plant local varieties of plants and trees.
Asking citizens not to fall for exotic trees, the civic body has said that trees that are suitable to local conditions must be chosen, adding that a tree audit will also be held regularly.
