Chennai: NABARD’s efforts in development of dairy industry are commendable: CGM on the occasion of World Milk Day-2021
World Milk Day was established by the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations in 2001 to recognize the importance of milk as a global food, and to celebrate the dairy sector.
Each year since then, the benefits of milk and dairy products have been actively promoted around the world, including how dairy supports the livelihoods of millions of people. More than 60 countries across the globe celebrate World Milk Day on 1 June every year.
In India, agriculture and dairy farming are inseparable from the farmers and dairy farming being a subsidiary activity to agriculture; it provides additional income to the farmers. Tamil Nadu is one of the pioneering States in the country in dairy farming under Cooperative sector. NABARD, Tamil Nadu Regional Office has been extending liberal support for the development of the sector in the State.
NABARD has sanctioned Rs. 416 crore for Establishment of Advanced Institute for Integrated Research on Livestock and Animal Sciences (AIIRLIVAS) in Salem district for creating State of the art infrastructure for research on Animal husbandry. NABARD sanctioned Rs. 487.16 lakh to 50 Dairy FPOs for promotion of dairy sector. SHGs and FPOs produce various types of milk based products for marketing.
NABARD has sanctioned Rs.137.13 crore for 29 projects to TCMPF (AAVIN) under Rural Infrastructure Development Fund (RIDF) in various districts of the State. Apart from RIDF, NABARD has sanctioned Rs.303 crore under Dairy Infrastructure Development Fund to National Dairy Development Board for onlending to Salem, Thanjavur, Tiruchirapalli and other TCMPF Milk Cooperative Unions in Tamil Nadu. Rs. 136.14 lakh subsidy has been released benefitting 78000 dairy entrepreneurs under Dairy Entrepreneurs Development Scheme (DEDS).
Banks in Tamil Nadu, viz., Commercial Banks, Tamil Nadu Grama Bank and Tamil Nadu State Apex Coop Bank including Dist. Central Coop Banks provide loans for rearing of milch animals, calf rearing, fodder cultivation and mini dairy projects. Banks provide loans under Kisan Credit Cards also.
Those who are involved in Dairy promotion sector viz., Animal Husbandry Department, TCMPF (Aavin), Veterinary Research Institutions including KVKs, Banks, NGOs should come forward to implement dairy sector projects in a coordinated manner. Research Projects should enhance productivity of milch animals.
Shri S Selvaraj, Chief General Manager said that on World Milk Day, NABARD rededicates for the cause of dairy development. NABARD would continue to support loan/grant/subsidy projects for Dairy development in the State of Tamil Nadu and UT of Puducherry.
