Pune chemical plant fire: Search operation resumes; firm owner summoned
Authorities resumed search operation today morning to look for any more victims at a chemical plant in Pune where a massive fire broke out yesterday.
They have also summoned the firm’s owner to ascertain what kind of materials was being used there, officials said.
Maharashtra Home Minister Dilip Walse-Patil is expected to visit the site later in the day and take stock of the situation.
Yesterday authorities said that 18 bodies were recovered from the firm’s premises. The fire broke out last afternoon at SVS Aqua Technologies, which manufactures chlorine dioxide among other chemicals.
Meanwhile a committee, led by the Sub Divisional Magistrate, has been formed to conduct a probe into the incident. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar had said an inquiry was ordered to find out the exact cause of the fire and an ex-gratia amount of Rs 5 lakh each will be given to the next of kin of the deceased.
