French Open: Rafael Nadal to face Novak Djokovic in semi-final
In the French Open men’s section, 13-time champion Rafael Nadal and top seeded Novak Djokovic will face each other in semi-final on Friday.
Nadal entered his 14th French Open semi-finals with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 win over Argentina’s 10th seed Diego Schwartzman, while Djokovic beat heavy-hitting Italian Matteo Berrettini 6-3 6-2 6-7(5) 7-5 in an intense duel.
Djokovic and Nadal have faced off 57 times with Djokovic leading 29-28. But Nadal has been his nemesis at Roland Garros winning seven of their eight clashes, including last year’s final.
No. 5 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas shattered the dreams of world No. 2 Daniil Medvedev of becoming world No. 1 by beating him in straight sets, 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), 7-5, to enter semi-finals.
Tsitsipas will now face world No. 6 Alexander Zverev who had earlier defeated Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 6-4, 6-1, 6-1
In the women’s section, defending champion Iga Swiatek was sent packing by Greek world No. 18 Maria Sakkari 6-4, 6-4 to set up a semi-final clash against Czech Republic’s Barbora Krejcikova.
Maria, who is now the highest-ranked player in the field, is just two wins away from a historic maiden Grand Slam singles title for a Greek woman.
Earlier, Russian 29-year-old Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova finally made it to a Grand Slam semi-final, in her sixth attempt, outlasting Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina 6-7 (2), 6-2, 9-7.
She will now meet unseeded Slovenian Tamara Zidansek.
