60th National Inter-State Athletics Ch’ships begins at NSNIS, Patiala
The 60th National Inter-State Athletics Championships began today at the Netaji Subhas National Institute of Sports (NSNIS), Patiala.
The first day of the five-day event witnessed six finals: men’s 10000m, men’s pole vault, women’s 5000m, 100m hurdles, triple jump and hammer throw events.
Vikram Bharatsinh of Madhya Pradesh won gold in men’s 10,000 metres by clocking 30 minutes 16.44 seconds.
However, his time was slower than the Tokyo qualification time of 27 minutes 28 seconds.
UP’s Kartik Kumar won silver with a time of 30 minutes 25.79 secs while Dinesh of Maharashtra clocked 30 minutes 50.74 secs to take home the bronze medal.
In the women’s 5,000m race, Parul Chaudhary of UP won gold in 16 minutes 04.7 seconds but again fell short of the Olympic qualification time of 15 minutes 10 seconds.
A handful of athletes from Sri Lanka are competing in the meet which will serve as the last competition for the Indian athletes to qualify for Olympic Games which will commence in Tokyo from July 23 to August 8.
The meet has been graded as a ‘B’ category event to achieve the World Athletics rankings and the Olympic qualification closes on June 29.
