NTPC-Simhadri provides community toilets under CSR activities for Clean and healthy citizens

NTPC Simhadri CSR initiative of providing community toilets at two village locations namely Parawada and Vadacheepurupalli has been commenced in Parawada Mandal, Visakhapatnam district in the state of Andhra Pradesh. A total amount of INR 33.00 Lakhs has been incurred to enhance sanitation practices in Vadacheepurupalli village and Parawada Village and for upkeep of Open Defecation Free status of Parawada Mandal.

Shri Annamreddi Adeep Raj, Hon’ble MLA Pendurthi and Shri Diwakar Kaushik, Group General Manager, NTPC inaugurated the Community Toilets at Parawada and Vadacheepurupalli villages in the presence of Shri Prem Chand, AGM (HR), CSR Team Members, Sarpanches of Parawada & Vadacheepurupalli, MPDO, RWS&S Officials and local leaders.

Open defecation has been the biggest impediment to improvement in health standards and quality of life in rural India and has profound wider socio-economic impacts – particularly for women and marginalized. It impedes the physical and cognitive development of surviving children, and reduces the human capital of India’s workforce, making the fulfillment of child rights, good physical, mental and social well-being unattainable in the absence of safe sanitation. Therefore, Sanitization becomes one of the core area of CSR at NTPC and is essential for achieving SDG 6 – Clean water and sanitation for all.

Midle of the post

The construction of these Community Toilets Blocks not only promotes the habit of using toilets and avoid open defecation but, at the same time promotes sanitation and hygiene in the entire village that would in turn help in the reduction of diseases and illness amongst the people in the village. The initiative will benefit over 1000 village residents, commuters and people transiting through market and market vendors and is a step towards Sampoorna Swachh India.

The key to appropriate utilization of community infrastructure is its regular upkeep and maintenance. To ensure this, NTPC will be facilitating the maintenance through a land losers society.

The initiative is yet another milestone in the NTPC CSR objective of making Parawada Mandal an open defecation free mandal and increase in quality of life of communities in Parawada Mandal.
