Olympics: Boxer Pooja Rani enters quarterfinals, Shuttler P.V. Sindhu and Archer Deepika Kumari progress to pre-quarterfinals
Indian eves continued their winning spree today in the ongoing Tokyo Olympic Games as Boxer Pooja Rani entered the quarterfinals, While star shuttler P.V. Sindhu and Archer Deepika Kumari have progressed to pre-quarterfinals.
On the sixth day today, India’s medal hopeful and Rio silver medallist P.V. Sindhu stormed into the pre-quarterfinals of Women’s Singles after defeating Hong Kong’s Cheung Ngan Yi 21-9, 21-16 in the final Group J match.
World No. 7 Sindhu will meet Group I topper Denmark’s world number 12 Mia Blichfeldt, at 6.15 a.m tomorrow. All India Radio will broadcast running commentary on the match.
In Men’s Singles, B. Sai Praneeth lost to Mark Caljouw of the Netherlands 21-11,14-11 in a Group ‘D’match.
In Boxing, Pooja Rani has entered the quarterfinals knocking out Ichrak Chaib of Algeria in Round of 16 of Women’s middleweight.
The Indian Archer, Deepika Kumari has reached the Pre-quarterfinals in women’s category defeating Mucino-Fernandez Jennifer of USA 6-4 in the round of 16. Earlier she won in the elemination round of 32 defeating Karma of Bhutan 6-0.
In Men’s category, Pravin Jadhav earlier defeated Galsan Bazarzhapov of Russian Olympic Committee in elimination round by 6-0. But later lost to Ellison Brady of United States in the next elimination round by 6-0.
In other competitions of Archery, Tarundeep Rai lost to Itay Shanny of Israel, 5-6 in the closely fought pre-quarterfinal. Earlier, Tarundeep had defeated Ukraine’s Oleksii Hunbin, 6-4 in the Round of 32.
In Rowing, duo of Arjun Lal Jat and Arvind Singh failed to qualify for the Men’s Lightweight Double Sculls final after finishing sixth and last in the second semifinal.
In Women’s Hockey, India lost to defending champions Great Britain, 1-4 in their third Pool ‘A’ clash. Sharmila Devi scored the lone goal for India. This was India’s second straight loss in Pool A following a 5-1 defeat by Netherlands. The loss leaves India at the bottom of Pool A. Indian team will next take on Ireland on Friday.
In Men’s Hockey, Indian team defeated Spain by 3-0 yesterday. With the second win India climbed up to the 2nd spot in the Pool A table. The Indians will next play reigning Olympic champions Argentina at 6 a.m. tomorrow. All India Radio will broadcast running commentary on the match.
In tomorrow’s major engagements, Indian pugilist Mary Kom will take on Columbia’s Valencia Victoria in Women’s 49 kilograme cartegory while in Men’s Super heavy category Satish Kumar will take on Jamaica’s Brown Recordo for round of 16. Shooters Manu Bhakar and Rahi Sarnobat will be in action for 25 meter pistol qualification precision round. India’s Golfer Anirban Lahiri will also try luck in the first round of competition.
