Chennai: Kalki awards distributed to Young Carnatic musicians
Kalki Krishnamurthy Memorial Trust celebrated the 122nd Birthday of Writer Kalki and the Kalki Awards were distributed to Carnatic Musicians. The function was held on September 9 at the Raga suda hall, Mylapore, Chennai. Senior Veena artist Jayanthi Kumaresh presided over the event. This year the Kalki Awards were given to vocalist Palakkad Ramprasad and Morsing artist Sai Subramaniam.
Jayanthi Kumaresh, who was the chief guest at the awards function fondly recalled the function held during Writer Kalki’s centenary year in 1999 wherein she was the recipient of the Kalki award and her katchery that followed the award function.
Lakshmi Natarajan, one of the trustees of the Kalki Krishnamurthy Memorial Trust, welcomed the gathering. Another trustee, Seetha Ravi, said, “The Kalki Awards have been given to talented young Carnatic musicians for the last 25 years and this is the 26th year for the awards.” Award winning vocalist Palakkad Ramprasad and Morsing artist Sai Subramaniam gave their acceptance speech. Trustee S. Chandra Mouli read out the citations and the Chief guest Jayanti Kumaresh distributed the awards.
Lakshmi Natarajan, said, “The Kalki Krishnamurthy Memorial Trust distributes scholarships annually to economically backward school and college students who excel in their studies. As schools and colleges did not open during last academic year, the scholarship amount has been added to this year’s educational assistance to the tune of Rs. 15.00 lakh.
