Punjab: Congress leader Charanjit Singh Channi to be new CM
Charanjit Singh Channi has been unanimously elected as leader of the Congress Legislature Party of Punjab.
The announcement of the name was made by Senior Congress leader and In charge of Punjab Party Affairs Harish Rawat on social media platform twitter.
The decision was taken in a high level meeting at New Delhi convened by Congress National President Sonia Gandhi at her residence.
Another Party leader Ajay Maken in a tweet said, Mr Rawat and senior leaders of Punjab, including newly elected Congress Legislature Party leader, have been called by Governor Banwarilal Purohit at 6:30 PM.
Mr Channi will be the new Chief Minister, a dalit face of the party.
This came after Captain Amarinder Singh resigned as Chief Minister of Punjab yesterday, saying he felt humiliated at the way the party handled the infighting in the state unit.
Assembly elections in Punjab are due to be held early next year. The current term of the state Assembly ends on March 27.
