Rare turtles moved from Hyderabad to Lucknow

Transfer from Hyderabad to Lucknow by air

266 rare turtles caught in smuggling have reached their own nest. The Indian Tent Turtle (Pangsura Tentoria Circum Data), also known as the Indian Routed Turtle (Pangsura Tecta), was safely flown on an Air India flight from Hyderabad to Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh on Sunday.

Last August, police arrested two criminals for smuggling turtles from the Gomti River near Lucknow and selling them in Hyderabad. The turtles were then moved to the zoo.

However, UP PCCF (Wildlife) Pawan Kumar Sharma has approached the Telangana Forest Department to move the turtles to Lucknow as there is more protection in natural habitats.

They were sent to Lucknow on an Air India flight with health packaging and safe packaging. UP officials said they would also conduct tests there and release them in the Gomti river.

Dr. Shailendra Singh, Director, TSA (Turtle Survival Alliance) India, said that the turtles were being smuggled as they were rare and steps should be taken to protect them. This is the second time that turtles caught in smuggling have been sent back to their natural habitats.

In 2015, 500 turtles were moved from Pune in Maharashtra to Lucknow. The event was attended by TSA team Imran Siddiqui, Sujit, Lucknow Sub divisional Officer Alok Pandey and Biologist Arunima.
