Ravichandran Ashwin hit a six off the first ball of the last over to help Delhi Capitals (DC) take an attritional four-wicket win against defending champions Mumbai Indians (MI) in Sharjah on Saturday in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Shreyas Iyer was unbeaten on 33 at the other end as the pair’s calm 39-run stand helped them chase down a low target of 130 with five balls to spare after DC lost their top order in the powerplay.

Unusually, it was a run out that got MI their first wicket with Kieron Pollard managing a direct hit after Shikhar Dhawan took off for a quick single.

Dhawan’s opening partner Prithvi Shaw fell to Krunal Pandya in the next over after which Steve Smith fell to his compatriot Nathan Coulter-Nile in the fifth. Smith’s dismissal left DC on 30/3 in five overs.

Captain Rishabh Pant then tried to counter attack with Shreyas Iyer at the other end, only to fall at 26 off 22 balls in the ninth over. DC then lost Axar Patel and Shimron Hetmyer in the next four overs but Shreyas remained calm and found a suitable partner in Ravichandran Ashwin. The pair calmly knocked down the required runs and took DC to victory.

Avesh Khan gave Delhi Capitals the breakthrough with the early wicket of captain Rohit Sharma. DC kept the pressure up on MI, never allowing the champions off the hook as Rishabh Pant was rewarded to bring on Axar Patel in the seventh over when the latter dismissed Quinton de Kock.

Such was the pressure poured on by DC that Anrich Nortje managed to bowl a rare wicket maiden in the 15th over, dismissing the dangerous Kieron Pollard with the first ball of the over and not letting Krunal Pandya get off strike for the rest of it. The next over only produced one run and Hardik Pandya was eventually dismissed in the 19th over thanks to a masterful inswinging yorker from Avesh Khan.

Avesh took another wicket, thus becoming the second DC bowler after Axar Patel to take three wickets on the day. Krunal Pandya ended things with a six off Ravichandran Ashwin off the last ball of the MI innings.
