On Rishabh Pant’s birthday, DC notched up their 4th straight win over CSK

Delhi Capitals held their nerve in a low-scoring thriller against Chennai Super Kings to hand their captain Rishabh Pant a birthday gift on Monday in Match 50 of IPL 2021. With the 3-wicket win over CSK, DC moved to the top of the points table again.

With 20 points in 13 matches, Delhi Capitals boosted their chances of finishing in the top 2 of the IPL 2021 points table and get an extra shot at reaching the final.

Delhi rode on a solid Shikhar Dhawan knock and a cameo from Shimron Hetmyer to gun down 137 in 19.4 overs. This was also DC’s 4th straight win over CSK in the IPL.

A drop catch from substitute fielder K Gowtham turned the match in favor of Delhi Capitals as Hetmyer would have been dismissed as early as the 18th over. Gowtham dropped a sitter at long on that brought down the equation to 18 from 15 balls.

The chase ebbed and flowed as Shardul Thakur gave CSK a lifeline by removing R Ashwin and a well-set Dhawan in the same over but Dwayne Bravo was not able to deliver at the death as CSK lost and slipped to the 2nd spot.

Shardul finished with figures of 13/2 in his 4-over spell, reminding the Indian team management once again that he is not part of the 15-man squad for the T20 World Cup. On the other hand, Ravindra Jadeja delivered with the ball with figures of 2/28 after dismissing Rishabh Pant and Ripal Patel, who replaced Steve Smith.

Earlier in the day, Chennai Super Kings huffed and puffed to 136/5 in 20 overs after a rare-failure from the top-order.

Ambati Rayudu hit his 21st IPL fifty as he remained unbeaten on 55 from 43 balls. Rayudu’s knock included 2 sixes and 5 boundaries as he remained the only man who hit a fifty in the low-scoring contest in Dubai on Monday.

Rayudu did the bulk of the scoring in a 70-run stand for the 5th wicket with MS Dhoni, who struggled for timing. Rayudu started slowly as CSK lost wickets in the hurry in the first 8 overs but the old warhorse got going even as his partners were struggling to get the big his out.

In contrast, MS Dhoni struggled to get going, hitting just 18 runs from 27 balls. The CSK captain, who has been a shadow of his former self in the ongoing edition of the IPL, did not hit a boundary or a six in an innings where he had faced more than 25 deliveries for the first time in 12 years.

It was also MS Dhoni’s slowest innings in the history of IPL wherein he has faced a minimum of 25 balls.

Delhi Capitals, who won the toss and opted to field, got their plan working right as Axar Patel struck to remove Faf du Plessis. Anrich Nortje got the big scalp of Ruturaj Gaikwad, who was had hit his maiden hundred in the previous match, to jolt Chennai Super Kings.

Moeen Ali and CSK debutant Robin Uthappa did not trouble the scorers but Rayudu’s innings got CSK a decent total on the board.
