AP Forest: Stork bird ‘Gudakonga’ as Kolleru Ambassador: PCCF
Kolleru has been appointed as the Ambassador of the stork bird ‘Gudakonga’ by Mr. N. Prateep Kumar IFS PCCF (HoFF) State Forest Department, Andhra Pradesh revealed. He unveiled the Andhra Pradesh Biodiversity Map today at Aranya Bhavan, Guntur.
On this occasion, he said that we all have a responsibility to protect the wetlands as part of environmental protection. The central government declared the Kolleru area as Ramsar in 2002.
He said that at present half of the Kolleru area is wildlife sanctuary and the rest is wetland.
He said Wetland Mitras had been hired to look after them. More than 40 percent of the world’s bird population is currently endemic.
The bird was selected as the Wetland Ambassador. He said that various awareness programs are being organized under the auspices of the forest department to explain the conservation of wetlands and their need.
Chief Minister YS Jagan Mohan Reddy. Forest Minister Balineni Srinivasa Reddy also said that he had issued clear directives to protect the state’s forest resources and wildlife conservation. The event was attended by DFO Selvam et al.
