Ruturaj Gaikwad and Robin Uthappa joined hands for 110-run stand for the 2nd wicket

“Dhoni finishes off in style” Chennai Super Kings captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni turned the clock back with a beautiful boundary off Tom Curran to help his team hammer Delhi Capitals by 4 wickets in Qualifier 1 on Sunday night, thus powering Men in Yellow storm into their 9th final at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. The table-toppers were considered to be the team to beat but CSK’s men proved too hot to handle for the table-toppers in Dubai on Sunday.

DC vs CSK Qualifier 1: Highlights

Chennai Super Kings will stay in Dubai and wait for the 2nd finalist for Friday’s IPL 2021 showdown, while Delhi Capitals will travel to Sharjah for Qualifier 2 on Wednesday. The winner of Monday’s Eliminator between Kolkata Knight Riders and Royal Challengers Bangalore will face Rishabh Pant-led DC.

Ruturaj-Uthappa put on a show for CSK

Chasing 173, CSK got off to a poor start as Anrich Nortje cleaned up opener Faf du Plessis in the very first over. However, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Robin Uthappa had different plans as the CSK opener joined hands with veteran batsman to stitch a record-breaking 110-run stand for the second wicket to put Chennai in control of the game.

Robin Uthappa (63 off 44 balls) gained redemption by being the pace-setter in the company of the young and flamboyant Ruturaj Gaikwad (70 off 50 balls). Tom Curran’s third over brought Qualifier 1 into Delhi’s grasp as the English all-rounder used his pace variation well to remove the set Uthappa (63) and newly promoted Shardul Thakur (0) in the same over. Ambati Rayudu was the next Chennai batsman to depart as excellent work in the outfield by Shreyas Iyer caught him short of his crease at the non-striker’s end.

Midle of the post

MS Dhoni, meanwhile, delivered in style, hitting 18 off 6 with the help of three fours and a six as CSK gunned down the 173-run target with two balls to spare. It was just six balls and in that he missed a couple and got boundaries off the rest. Dhoni’s wife Sakshi was pictured hugging daughter Ziva after CSK captain’s vintage show.

The commentators on air were on their feet as Dhoni finished the game with a boundary when 4 runs were needed off 3 balls in the final over.

Rishabh Pant’s unbeaten 51 and Prithvi Shaw’s well-paced 60 helped Delhi Capitals post a competitive score of 172/5 against Chennai Super Kings in the first Qualifier. Pant forged a solid 83-run stand for the fifth wicket with West Indies’ power hitter Shimron Hetmyer (37 off 24 balls).

Pant hit three fours and two sixes as Delhi Capitals didn’t ultimately pay the price for playing a specialist batter short as they capitalised on a blazing start provided by opener Prithvi Shaw (60 off 34 balls), who took the opposition on with seven fours and three sixes.

While Shikhar Dhawan (7) and Shreyas Iyer (1) were dismissed by Josh Hazlewood in the Powerplay, Axar Patel (10) failed to succeed after being promoted. Faf du Plessis ran sideways to take a well-judged catch and end Prithvi Shaw’s entertaining knock in Ravindra Jadeja’s over.

Coming together at 80 for 4, Hetmyer and Pant initially just nudged around for a few singles and doubles before the flamboyant Caribbean pulled a short one from Moeen Ali for a six. While Hetmyer fell to fellow West Indian Dwayne Bravo in the 18th over, Pant continued his innings and got to his first fifty in the UAE leg on the last delivery of the innings with a double off Shardul Thakur.
