Tamil Nadu informs Kerala, water will be released through spillway shutters of Mullaiperiyar dam tomorrow
Tamil Nadu has informed Kerala that water will be released through the spillway shutters of the Mullaiperiyar dam at 7 am tomorrow. This was mentioned in a Facebook post of the Kerala Irrigation Minister Roshy Augustine.
He said water will be released if water level continues to rise in the reservoir. The Minister said all precautionary measures have been taken by the state in view of the likely release of water from Mullaiperiyar. The Idukki District Collector has asked people living on the banks of river Periyar to shift to temporary camps.
Inflow into the Mullaiperiyar reservoir has increased with the catchment areas of the dam receiving heavy rains since last evening. The dam’s water level has risen to 138.05 ft. The reservoir is receiving an inflow of 5800 cusecs, while Tamil Nadu is drawing 2300 cusecs.
Meanwhile, the authorities have closed the third shutter of the Cheruthoni dam yesterday afternoon, as the water level in the Idukki reservoir touched 2397.90 ft. The water level in the dam is currently at 2398.20 feet, following increased inflow.
