Kerala opens two spillway shutters of Mullaperiyar dam
In Kerala, two spillway shutters of Mullaperiyar Dam were opened this morning, releasing 234 cusecs of water from the reservoir.
Water release from the century-old dam was in the backdrop of the Met Department warning about the possibility of heavy rains during the next few days.
Tamil Nadu which maintains the dam situated in Kerala, has said water release will continue till the reservoir level reaches 138 feet. The current water level in the dam is at 138.70 feet.
Over 300 families living along the banks of the river Periyar between Mullaperiyar and Idukki dams were shifted to temporary camps as a precautionary measure.
A red alert has been issued in Idukki dam, where permission has been granted to release 100 cumecs of water from the reservoir. The water level in Idukki is at 2398.32 feet, as against its full reservoir level of 2403 feet.
Meanwhile, the IMD has issued orange alerts in six districts of the state today, indicating the likelihood of heavy to very heavy rainfall.
