Goa: Actor Hema Malini conferred Indian Film Personality of Year Award in 52nd edition of IFFI

The 52nd International Film Festival of India (IFFI) got underway in Goa yesterday. Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Anurag Thakur inaugurated the 9-day event at a glittering ceremony.

Speaking on the occasion, Mr Thakur said, IFFI is embracing new technology and keeping with the pace, giving platforms to artists and Film industry to engage with them. He said, for the first time, they are recognising and mentoring promising young talents through ’75 Young Creative Minds of Tomorrow’.

This year’s IFFI is also celebrating 75 years of India’s independence and 60 years of the liberation of Goa. Speaking at the ceremony the Chief Minister of Goa and Secretary of the information and broadcasting ministry underlined that India’s achievement of administering over 1.16 billion vaccine doses has allowed the people to enjoy this celebration of cinema.

Veteran actor Hema Malini was conferred ‘Indian Film Personality of the Year’ award.

The newly instituted Satyajit Ray Lifetime Achievement Award this year was awarded to acclaimed Hungarian filmmaker Istvan Szabo. In his video message he thanked the Indian film community for having recognized his work. The award was also presented to American filmmaker Martin Scorsese.

In his video message, Mr. Scorsese referred to Satyajit Ray as one of his masters. The opening ceremony was followed by the International Premier of the opening film, “The King of all the World” directed by Carlos Saura.

The 75 creative minds competition will officially begin today. The inaugural ceremony which is being held under the aegis of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav celebrating 75 years of India’s independence is expected to start at 11 AM. The grand jury features household names such as Prasoon Joshi, Oscar-winning sound engineer Resul Pookutty, Director Ketan Mehta and Musician Shankar Mahadevan among others.

For the first time ever, films from five BRICS countries namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa- will be showcased through the BRICS Film Festival alongside IFFI. The five countries are also the “Focus Countries” of the 52nd IFFI. The BRICS section will also be flagged off today.
