In the 2021 Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships being held in Tashkent, weightlifter Hazarika Popy has clinched a silver medal in the women’s 59-kilogram category. Hazarika lifted 84 kilograms in snatch and 105 kilograms in clean and jerk for a total of 189 kilograms to take the second spot on the podium.
Nigeria’s Rafiatu Lawal lifted a total of 207 kilograms to win the gold medal while Sri Lankan N Rajapaksa lifted 164 kilograms to bag the bronze medal.
However, Popy’s lifts could help her only to achieve 17th ranking in the World Weightlifting Championships 2021 which are being held simultaneously with the Commonwealth Championship. Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Kuo Hsing-Chun of Chinese Taipei has been crowned the world champion for the fifth time.
On December 10, teenage weightlifting sensation Jeremy Lalrinnunga had won the gold medal in the men’s 67kg category at the event. Earlier, Guru Raja had won the silver medal in the men’s 61kg category.
The Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships also serve as a qualifying event for the 2022 Commonwealth Gamez in Birmingham. The gold medalists in each weight category in the Commonwealth Weightlifting Championships directly qualify for the 2022 CWG and the rest will qualify through Commonwealth rankings.
