Aus Open 2022: Naomi Osaka loses to Amanda Anisimova, Rafael Nadal, and Victoria Azarenka sail into 4th round
In Tennis, Defending champion Naomi Osaka has been knocked out of the Australian Open after losing to unseeded Amanda Anisimova 4-6 6-3 7-6 (10-5) in the third round match of Women’s Singles at Melbourne Park.
Anisimova, a 20-year-old American ranked 60th in the world, will play Australian top seed Ashleigh Barty in the fourth round. Barty has still not dropped a set this week after a 6-2, 6-3 victory over Italy’s Camila Giorgi.
The 25-year-old Queenslander is carrying the hopes of a nation desperate to see a home Australian Open champion for the first time since Chris O’Neil in 1978.
In the other Women’s Singles match, two-time Australian Open champion Victoria Azarenka overpowered 15th-seeded Elina Svitolina 6-0, 6-2 to reach the fourth round at Melbourne Park for the first time since 2016.
She will next play French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova, who rallied from a set and a break down against 26th-seeded Jelena Ostapenko to win 2-6, 6-4, 6-4.
In Men’s Singles, 20-time Grand Slam champion and sixth seed Rafael Nadal eased past Karen Khachanov 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 to sail into the fourth round yesterday.
World number three and Tokyo Olympic gold medallist Alexander Zverev also entered the last 16, defeating 124th-ranked Radu Albot 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 on John Cain Arena.
Seventh seed Matteo Berrettini overcame Spanish youngster Carlos Alcaraz to reach the Round of 16.
