AUS Open: Ashleigh Barty and Rafael Nadal march into quarterfinals
In Australian Open Tennis, Top-ranked Ashleigh Barty has entered the Women’s Singles quarterfinals with a 6-4, 6-3 win over American Amanda Anisimova at Rod Laver Arena in Melbourne today. Barty is aiming to be the first Australian woman to win her home Grand Slam title since 1978 and has gone through the first four rounds without dropping a set.
20-year-old Anisimova was coming off a third-round upset over Defending Champion Naomi Osaka.
Barty will next play 21st seed American Jessica Pegula, who beat fifth-seeded Maria Sakkari 7-6, 6-3.
In the other Women Singles matches, unseeded Madison Keys defeated eighth seed Paula Badosa in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 to reach the quarterfinals. In the last eight, Keys will meet fourth seed Barbora Krejčíková who beat Victoria Azarenka 6-2, 6-2.
In Men’s singles, Sixth seed Rafael Nadal edge past Adrian Mannarino of France, 7-6, 6-2, 6-2 to advance into quarter-finals. Nadal will face 14th seed Canadian Denis Shapovalov who knocked out third seed Alexander Zverev from the tournament with a 6-3, 7-6, 6-3 win in the pre-quarterfinals.
17th seed Gael Monfils’ also marched into the last eight after defeating Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic 7-5, 7-6, 6-3.
In Mixed Doubles, Indian-American pair of Sania Mirza and Rajeev Ram cruised into the quarter-finals after beating Australian- Dutch duo of Ellen Perez and Matwe Middelkoop 7-6(6), 6-4.
