N Biren Singh to continue as Manipur CM for 2nd straight term
N. Biren Singh will continue as the Chief Minister of Manipur for the second straight term. A team of the BJP’s central observers made this announcement in Imphal this afternoon.
After a closed-door meeting with the BJP legislators at the State party headquarters, Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said, new-elected MLAs have unanimously elected N. Biren Singh as their legislature party leader.
She hoped the decision would go a long way in ensuring political stability and good governance in Manipur. She had reached Imphal from New Delhi in the morning with Union Ministers Bhupendra Yadav and Kiren Rijiju.
Meanwhile, the BJP party met the Governor of Manipur La Ganesan this evening and staked claim for government formation in the state. The party leaders informed the Governor that newly elected MLAs have unanimously elected N. Biren Singh as their legislature party leader. Our correspondent reports that the Governor asked the party leaders to let the Raj Bhawan know the timing and date of the formation of the new government.
In Manipur assembly elections, BJP got absolute majority with 32 seats out of 60 seats. Moreover, MLAs of JD (U), KPA along with one Independent MLA declared that unconditional support will be given to BJP in the government formation.
