Vizag Zoo celebrates National Zoo Lovers’ Day
Indira Gandhi Zoological Park celebrates ‘National Zoo Lovers’ Day ‘ On this occasion special events were held on Friday at the Zoo Park to entertain the students. Visakhapatnam has launched an innovative program for students named ZOO CLUB”, “ZOO SCHOOL” & “ZOO AMBASSADOR”. The poster for this program was unveiled by Dr. Nandani Salaria, IFS, Curator, IGZP along with various school and college Principals and teachers at the Bioscope Venue in Zoo Park on April 8th.
Teachers and students from various schools and colleges participated in this event. It is important to educate school children about environmental protection and wildlife conservation from this early age, said Dr. Nandani Salaria, IFS.
Zoo Club: Zoo Club is a group of students/persons organized with a similar interest in Wildlife Conservation, which provides an opportunity for students to engage with Indira Gandhi Zoological Park, closely and remotely to participate in educational activities and wildlife conservation.
Zoo School Program: Zoo School Program is designed on a year basis for the students, expose to learn about the wildlife and conservation efforts taken in Indira Gandhi Zoological Park. A core part of our work is to promote conservation education curriculum in Schools. Therefore Zoo School Programs aims to create a healthy competition between all schools in a district. Zoo Ambassador.
Zoo Ambassador is to instill a greater understanding of animals amongst participating members and consequently aims to inspire support for the conservation. We focus on the efficacy of zoo ambassador in achieving conservation goals in zoo through certain achievable targets. Teachers from various schools thanked the Indira Gandhi Zoological Park curator Dr. Nandani Salaria for taking initiative for this program.
Later, Dr. Nandani Salaria, IFS, Curator, IGZP unveiled a poster for the “Zoo Volunteer Certification Program giving Visakhapatnam residents an opportunity to serve as a volunteer at the zoo. Anyone interested in the environmental care and wildlife can volunteer at the Vizag Zoo, Curator said.
Volunteers should give their service in zoo at various work areas such as planting, guided zoo tour, plastic recycling, education & awareness program etc for a period of one week. Those who have completed all work areas in a week will be awarded with certificates, she added. Anyone over the age of 18years can participate in this volunteer program.
Students from different schools and individuals enthusiastically participated in the competition titled “Design Your Own Zoo’. We conducted this competition to unleash the creativity in the students. Various schools and children made and displayed zoo models with their own ideas. Students exhibited approximately 12 zoo miniature models. The winners were presented with trophies and certificates.
GITAM University NSS Program Coordinator Mr. Srinivas has also participated in the program and expressed their interest and commitment towards working with zoo for the Volunteer Certificate Program. Principals, teachers and students from various schools, Assistant Curator Uma Maheswari, Forest Section Officers and Zoo Education Team participated in this program.
