Andhra University IPR Chair Prof. Purushotham on the DPIIT Working Group on IPRs

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), Ministry of Commerce & Industry Govt of India constituted an expert consultative committee working group to assist the Government on the issues that may arise in ongoing international negotiations on Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) under Free Trade Agreements (FTAs).

The Committee has 31 members drawn from different IPR Chairs of premier Universities, Ministry Departments and Industry groups, who will act as the backbone to DPIIT to present the Indian stance during the trade negotiations.The Committee works under Ms Shruti Singh IAS Joint Secretary (IPR), DPIITas Chief Negotiator.

Prof PVGD Prasad Reddy Vice Chancellor Andhra University has nominatedProf Hanumanthu Purushotham DPIIT- IPR Chair Professorof Andhra University for consideration as a member of the working group against the nominations sought by the DPIIT.

The DPIIT has accepted the nomination and appointed Prof H Purushotham as one of the working group members on the Expert Consultative Committee.The Office order of DPIIT says that the appointed members provide their expert views and inputs on various IPR issues on the Enforcement provisions and measures embodied in the Trade Related Aspects of Intellectual Property(TRIPS) Agreement and International Union for the Protection of New Varieties of Plants (UPOV) Convention 1991.

Prof V Krishna Mohan Registrar saidover the years,IPR protection has come to the forefront as a key international trade issue for the countries worldwide and that is the reason that IPR negotiations figure prominently in the multilateral trade policy arena and in various Foreign Trade Agreements (FTA).

Prof H Purushotham said, it is for the first time DPIIT has constituted the working group from different organisations to utilize the domain expertise that will certainly benefit mutually to build the capacity in the IPR eco-system and chalk out the basic framework for India’s stand during the FTA negotiations.

He has further said that India had included IP provisions so far only in three of its FTAs namely India-Korea, India-Singapore and India -Japan and currently engaged in FTAs with important trade partners like UK, EU, Canada, US and many more countries to enhance its foreign trade and thereby reduce the trade gap significantly to achieve the mission of Atmanirbhar Bharat programme.

Prof PVGD Prasad Reddy the Vice Chancellor and Prof V Krishna Mohan, Registrar and other faculty Members congratulated Prof Purushotham and said it will enhance the efforts of A.U. in promoting IPR and act as a nodal agency to accelerate the foreign trade in the State. The orders were handed over in presence of the Vice Chancellor Prof PVGD Prasad Reddy
