Jammu-Srinagar national highway remained closed for the second day in a row

The Jammu-Srinagar National Highway (NH44) shall remain closed for vehicular traffic for the second consecutive day today at Mehad in Ramban district. The 270 km National Highway is the only all-weather surface link connecting Kashmir valley with the rest of the country.

In view of the prevailing weather conditions and shooting stones from around 200 feet height at Mehad, the highway shall remain closed for traffic. IGP Traffic Police, Vikram Jeet Singh said no vehicular movement shall be allowed today from either side of the national highway.

He said restoration work is on at the affected locations, the weather is cloudy, but continuous shooting stones are hampering the National Highway restoration work. Once it is stopped & restoration work is completed, the stranded Amarnath Yatris will be allowed to move to their destinations on priority.

Due to weather conditions, 4704 Amarnath Yatris who left Bhagwati Nagar Jammu base camp yesterday morning are stranded at Yatri Niwas, Chanderkoot in Ramban and 4531 pilgrims coming from Baltal towards Jammu are stranded at FCI, Mir Bazar, Anantnag & Walnut Factory Qazigund since yesterday morning.

However, the historic Mughal road, the alternate National Highway connecting the twin Border districts of Rajouri and Poonch of Jammu region with the Shopian district of Kashmir valley, is clear for vehicular traffic.
