Hyderabad: ‘Follow your heart and never give up’; says CCMB Director at GITAM Convocation
CCMB Director advises Graduands at GITAM Convocation
‘We as people tend to think that success is due to our efforts, and we attribute failures to somebody else fault. Own your failures; learn from them, and show resilience,’ Dr. Vinay K.Nandicoori, Director, Centre for Cellular & Molecular Biology (CCMB), advised the graduands in his convocation address as Chief Guest at the 13th Convocation of GITAM Deemed to be University, Hyderabad, held on 30th July 2022.
Dr. Vinay recounted his journey from primary education in Coastal Andhra Pradesh villages, B.Sc. at Visakhapatnam, M.Sc. at IIT-Bombay, Ph.D. at IISc Bengaluru to a career in the USA. He said that ‘in these last 24 years of my journey through my career, there have been many bad days, disappointments, and a good number of highs.’ While he quoting the 19th Century German Philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”, he told. This statement used as an affirmation of resilience is indeed true for disappointments that we face in our life, he explained.
While briefing about his Ph.D. days, he explained that “the world is very different compared to learning and writing exams. Mentors you choose play a vital role in shaping your Ph.D. journey and what you learn during that.
The major difference is that there is no exam at the end of six months that would assess how much you have learned. More importantly, there is no competition; it is all about your determination, hard work, and ambition. The journey has it’s up and down, and you need good friends to see you through those bad times.”
