Hyderabad: Syyad L. Babamiya obtained PhD in Mechanical Engineering from GITAM
The GITAM Deemed-to-be University has awarded Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering to Sayyad Layak Babamiya for his thesis ‘Design and Analysis of Superfinishing Lathe Attachment’ submitted under the guidance of Prof. A.Satyadevi, Department of Aerospace Engineering, School of Technology, GITAM, Hyderabad.
Research has been carried out to find the problem faced by the super-finishing lathe attachment. It is understood through FEA analysis that the oscillating piston gets jammed in the sleeve due to the thermal expansion of the sleeve during operation.
A solution was given by coating the sleeve’s inner with Ebonite (a hard rubber), which has very low thermal conductivity, and the temperature rise is also very low, which was confirmed with the test conducted on a tribometer.
In addition to that, crowning is given to the piston and a high-temperature insulation coating of 64C1-2A is applied on the outer surface of the sleeve. This coating acts as a barrier between the heated cylinder and the ebonite coating.
Prof. D.S.Rao, Pro Vice-Chancellor, GITAM, Hyderabad, DVVSR Varma, Resident Director, Prof. N.Seetaramaiah, Associate Director, School of Technology, and Heads of various engineering & basic science departments and faculty appreciated Layak Babamiya on his achievement.
