Telangana government established the first forest university in the country in Mulugu

With the intention of giving priority to forestry education as well as technical education, Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhara Rao established the Forest College and Research Institute (FCRI) in the state in 2016. Now the same college is being upgraded as a university. At Mulugu near Hyderabad, the campus is already ready with state-of-the-art facilities, modern buildings and all necessary facilities for forestry education.
In 2016, the college was first started at Dulapalli Forest Academy and shifted to the Mulugu campus near Hyderabad on the initiative of the Chief Minister. Forest College is continuing with all amenities and modern facilities unlike any university or college campus in the country. Now with the change to a university, this Forest College is going to become the first forest university in the country. The government has focused on the necessary infrastructure, governance and appointments.
In the context of international environmental changes and increasing priorities for biodiversity, the Telangana government has given special attention to forest education. Also, it is CM’s wish that national level environmental experts and all India level officials will come from this campus.
Accordingly, the students who have studied BSc forestry education from the first batch till now are studying higher education in the famous Dehradun Forestry Research Institute, Banaras Hindu University, ICAR, etc. in the country along with American universities. Recently a student also secured I.F.S.
Ms.Priyanka Varghese, an IFS officer who has been efficiently handling the responsibilities as Chief Minister OSD (Haritaharam) since the beginning, continues as the Dean of Forest College. Under his supervision, the college has gained national recognition and is now going to become the first forest university in the country.
Ms. Priyanka Varghese said that the Chief Minister, who is implementing the Telangana Ku Harithaharam scheme for greening and environment-friendly state, established the Forest College with a lot of foresight, and now it is a great thing that the government has upgraded it to a university. She said that with increasing importance of forestry education, rural youth will get better opportunities.
Legislature and Legislative Council approved Forest University. This is a historic moment in the country’s forestry education.

The Government of Telangana has decided to develop the Forest College and Research Institute (FCRI) into a world-class institution for forestry education, research, extension and dissemination of results to the public. Towards this end, it is proposed to constitute the College of Forestry & Research Institute, Hyderabad as a full-fledged “University of Forestry (UoF)” through a special Act with the following elements:
To promote research tailored to meet the needs of industry and the public by developing appropriate techniques for tree cultivation under the supervision of qualified foresters who produce forest resources for sustainable management.
Apart from traditional forestry activities, development of agroforestry models adapted to different agro-ecological conditions, reduction of pressure on natural forests, economic development of agricultural communities and improvement of environmental conditions.
Enhancing subject knowledge through affiliation and partnership with similar institutions. To promote dissemination of research results to farmers through training. The establishment of the University of Forestry (UOF) will produce trained forestry professionals as per the requirements of the Forest Department.
After making the forestry college and research institute a university, it is decided to start additional PhD courses, diploma and certificate courses in Urban Forestry, Nursery Management, Agroforestry, Tribal Livelihood Enhancement, Forest Entrepreneurship, ClimateSmartForestry & Forest Parks Management.
As a result, the number of students will increase by 360 to 726 in addition to the existing number of 366. The number of employees will increase by 92 to 210 from the existing number of 118.
