The International Millet Year-2023 launched with a theme ‘Nutrition through Nutri Millets’ at GITAM Deemed to be University, Hyderabad on 25th January 2023. The Department of Food Science & Technology, School of Science organized this event.
Dr. B.Neeraja Prabhakar, Vice-Chancellor, Sri Konda Laxman Telangana State Horticultural University, Mulugu has launched it by lighting the lamp along the Dr. C.Aruna Reddy, Principal Scientist, Indian Institute of Millets Research, Hyderabad; Dr. Ananthan, Scientist ‘E’, Food Chemistry Division, ICMR-NIN, Hyderabad; Dr. D.Kodandaram Reddy, OU, and Buduru Salome Yesudas, Board of Director, VIKASA, Visakhapatnam.
While delivering the chief guest speech, Dr. Neeraja said that the millets are nutritionally rich and help in overcoming malnutrition and food insecurity. The VC opined that recently introduced millets fetch higher market value (than even major cereals) and help uplift the socio-economic status of the marginal farmers under dryland conditions.
Prof. K.Uma Maheshwari, HoD, Food Science & Technology delivered the welcome speech, and Dr. G.Niharika, Assistant Professor proposed the vote of thanks.
Prof. D.S.Rao, Pro Vice-Chancellor, GITAM, Hyderabad; Prof. Dattatri K.Nagesha, Principal, School of Science also took part in this launching ceremony. The certificates and Prizes were distributed to the Elocution, E-Essay, Innovative millet recipe, and Poster presentation competition winners.
