Department of Food Science and Technology, School of Science, GITAM, Hyderabad organized a Poster Competition on ‘Millet Processing: Equipment, Machinery, and Packaging’ at its campus (Shivaji Foyer Hall) on 14th March 2023, as the continuation of the International Year of Millets-2023 series. Dr. Charit Kumar, Assistant Professor, College of Agriculture Engineering, Kandi judged the event and selected the winners.
During the poster presentation, the students explained that the processing of millet is the conversion of raw, harvested millet grains into edible and marketable products. They are three stages of processing called primary, secondary, and tertiary.
Primary processing involves methods like de-hulling, soaking and germination, etc., which makes the millet edible. Secondary processing occurs when fermentation, baking, and puffing techniques. Millets can undergo tertiary processing to produce value-added products.
They also added that there are many pieces of equipment used in millet processing such as de-hullers, millers, flaking machines, and puffing machines. Most commonly used are de hullers, millers, and puffing machines. De-huller is a machine used to remove the millet’s outer layer.
The purpose is to improve the quality, increase the shelf life,make it appealing to consumers and to make process more efficient by reducing waste. Miller is a milling process basically works on the principal called size reduction.
A miller grinds grain into flour making them usable for food production while improving texture, taste and flavour and Puffing Machine is to process millet grains by applying heat and pressure to produce puffed millets used in various food products.
Havana 2.0 at GITAM
The department of EECE of GITAM School of Technology is going to organize a two-day technical event ‘Havana-2.0’ at its campus on 16-17 March 2022.
The events like- Project Expo (Cast Prizes worth Rs.30,000/-) Robo Race, Electronic Sketch, Paper & Poster Presentation, Line Follower, Drone Race, Techno Quiz, Treasure Hunt and Debate, etc will be held.
