NTPC-Ramagundam : Enriching Environment with Miyawaki Method

First in NTPC and maybe first by any corporation in Telangana State to come forward and develop dense native forest in urban area with Miyawaki technique, NTPC-Ramagundam/Telangana has launched Pilot Miyawaki Project on January 23, 2020 at its Oxidation Pond area covering over 1618 sqmt area with plantation of around 3350 trees with 53 varieties of species.

The Miyawaki method of afforestation which has revolutionized the concept of urban afforestation by turning backyards into mini-forest has been pioneered by Japanese botanist Akira Miyawaki. This method is ideal for urban spaces where a few cents of land can be set aside to increase the green cover.

NTPC always concerned for enriching the environment, found the technique suitable to deal with land shortage while ensuring more plantation with faster and denser forest. What further fascinated to go for Miyawaki Technique is the no use of chemicals and chemical fertilizers. This ensures that we grow a cent per cent native, organic and natural plantation within short time. After two years of plantation, it becomes self-sufficient and does not rely on any external maintenance. These dense forests not only help retain groundwater, recharge groundwater tables and support local biodiversity but also increase green cover and curb air pollution.

Developed in association with Peddapalli District Administration & Forest Deptt and executed by Telangana State Forest Development Corporation Limited (TSFDCL), the Pilot Project has gone through scientific way of planting.  After selection of the location based on soil quality, water availability and secured boundary wall, seven sectors developed with each bed digging upto 0.60 mtrs depth followed by filling with various layers of Rice Husk, Farmyard Manure, Cocopeat and Jeeva Mutram. Subsequently, planting points are marked at a Grid of 0.75M X 0.75M and then species of high canopy (16 varieties), Medium canopy (19 varieties) and Low canopy (18 varieties) are planted in these planting points.

Being a Pilot project the progress will be closely monitored and documented so that it can be replicated in other areas may be in large scale. Within five months, the pilot Miyawaki project fast developed as dense forest with 100% survival. The growth coupled with flowers and fruits mesmerized all and is a boost for urban foresting.
